Sheela’s Venture - Jankalyan

Gram Sabha in Sakharda village, Ucchal district was a non existent entity. The villagers were not aware of its functions and the assistance they could derive from it. Sheela ardently took up this issue and today the villagers are a part of the Gram Sabha solving various civic issues in their area. Sheela has been educating the villagers about their rights thus helping them lead a better life. Whether it is solving the problem of havoc wreaking floods during rains by constructing drains or free health services in Government hospitals under the LIC scheme she has brought about a sea change in the community. Over 200 villagers have so far got job cards from the Gram Sabha enabling them to work in their village, earning a better livelihood. While she continues to get new job cards made she has also helped villagers apply for new meter boxes soon bringing electricity into their homes. Sheela’s dream is to work for the poor people, share their pain and improve their lives. She feels by making them a part of the Gram Sabha she has been able to provide them with a platform where they can speak about their problems and find solutions. They no longer have to live in misery. They can fight for their rights and be independent. In her words, “I can talk to the authorities very confidently now and do not feel nervous in front of anybody. I have gained knowledge on how to educate and help other people.”
