Kavita Rokade - CHANGEMAKER
Posted on 18. Jun, 2009 by Aditi in Community Mobilization, Health, Our Changemakers
Kavita has studied till the tenth standard and works domestically. The practice of child marriage prevelant in her basti (slum) in Chembur, Mumbai, where parents marry their daughters off before they turn eighteen stifling the girls’ chances for personal growth, study, and employment, led to the creation of Sanskruti (culture). She and her team have surveyed their community and have researched this subject with Rajesh Kolambkar of Jyoti Ahir. The team organises meetings in the community inviting doctors to come and discuss body parts, hygiene, babies, pregnancy and responsibilities. They have also created posters and a street play to raise awareness about the ills of child marriage and the alternatives to it. Sanskruti regularly holds classes every Sunday which are attended by more than 20 girls from the basti. It is inspiring to see the grit and determination in one so young. Her aim is to prevent child marriages in her basti by providing alternative solutions to the young girls and their families.
