Geeta’s Venture: Shakti (”Power”)

For the girls of Geeta’s basti (slum), life revolves around domestic responsibilities.  The prevailing attitude in the community is that education is for boys - girls cannot be distracted from their household duties.  Geeta broke the mould when she graduated from high school.  Through her Venture, Shakti, she integrating girl’s education into her community’s value system.
Last year, Geeta lead classes for a group of almost 20 girls.  She opened their eyes to the power education has as a platform for independence and income generation.  Geeta also engaged their parents in sessions, addressing their concerns about balancing school and chores.  This year, she will coach another group of drop-outs to help them re-enroll in formal schooling.  Geeta is transforming her community, one mind at a time.
